In a groundbreaking move aimed at revolutionizing the way music producers are compensated, the “Support The Sound” initiative has been introduced, heralding a new era of fairness in the music industry. Spearheaded by the teams behind iconic nightclubs including New York’s Basement and Tibilsi’s Bassiani, this initiative is set to change the landscape of music royalties and compensation.
Launched with the vision of ensuring music producers receive fair earnings whenever their tracks are played at clubs or festivals, “Support The Sound” is a much-needed adjustment in the industry. The initiative recognizes the crucial role of producers in energizing DJ sets and aims to provide them with the acknowledgment and compensation they deserve.
Utilizing the innovative revenue-sharing software tool Aslice, developed by techno artist DVS1 in 2022, “Support The Sound” enables DJs to share their earnings directly with the music producers. This platform not only fosters a culture of sharing but also emphasizes the collective responsibility of supporting the music that underpins the industry. As DVS1 aptly puts it, “Why wouldn’t we support the sound? Our industry would be nothing without the music.”
The initiative has garnered support from a global network of nightclubs and promoters who are committed to adopting this new approach. Notable participants include Amsterdam’s Dekmantel, Brussels’ Fuse, Los Angeles’ SIX AM Group and Synthetik Minds, New York City’s Wire Festival, and Tokyo’s WOMB. Starting in 2024, these members will raise awareness about their commitment to fair compensation, with plans to require all DJs to share their playlists from 2025 onwards. Failure to comply may impact future bookings and collaborations, highlighting the seriousness of the initiative’s objectives.
Ethan Holben, CEO of Aslice, shared his enthusiasm for the potential impact of “Support The Sound” on the industry. By ensuring producers are compensated for their work, the initiative not only benefits artists but also aids clubs and festivals in managing playlist data efficiently. This, in turn, helps in fulfilling legal obligations towards music producers regarding royalties.
