If you found ‘Déjà Vu’ familiar, you’re not alone. Lane 8, the head honcho of This Never Happened, gave fans a sneak peek by featuring it in his mixtape last week. As the final teaser before the full album release on April 5th, ‘Déjà Vu’ stands out with its combination of upbeat vocals by Molly Moonwater and the deep, glissando bass notes that introduce the track. Rinzen’s skillful addition of a chunky synth melody further enriches the track, perfectly encapsulating Sundius’ vision of a narrative that balances stark reality with a sense of hopeful aspiration. The collaboration with Molly Moonwater, also known as Sophie Bel in the indie/alt scene, is particularly noteworthy.
Rinzen shared his thoughts on the collaboration, stating, “Molly Moonwater’s original demo of ‘Déjà Vu’ was slow, reminiscent of a ’90s ballad. However, her vocal enchanted me. Speeding up the track to 120 BPM and adding a chugging bassline breathed new life into it. Upon crafting the synth melody, I knew it was destined to be a standout piece on the album.”
Lane 8’s recent seasonal mixtape, featuring three new tracks from Rinzen’s upcoming album, has amped up the excitement among fans, offering a generous preview of what’s to come. Rinzen’s live performances are also highly anticipated, with appearances scheduled to support Sultan & Shepard’s tour in Toronto on April 19, a special all-night show at Sound LA on May 4th, and more, including his participation in the We Belong Here Festival in NYC on May 24th.
