Early Life & Background
Deadmau5, whose real name is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, was born on January 5, 1981, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. From an early age, he was hooked on music. He started piano lessons and shortly thereafter was given a keyboard for Christmas as a young teenager. He attended Westlane Secondary School in Niagara Falls and went on to become a programmer and work for an online music licensing company, one of the first of its kind. In his spare time, he started playing around with chiptune and demoscene movements with the Impulse Tracker, a multi-track music tracker and co-produced a dance music program at Niagara Falls radio station.
Zimmerman adopted the stage name in 2002 Deadmau5 after jokingly telling people in an internet chat room that he found a dead mouse in his computer. They started calling him “the mouse guy” and as many people do, he turned it into wordplay with “Deadmau5.” This name would soon become synonymous with his unique brand and image. And though his debut album & first live shows began in the early 2000s (album in 2005), he didn’t wear the mask until 2008.
